Be Your Own DJ - Personalize Your Blog With Music

Although OnSugar allows you to upload MP3s to your blog -- just use the audio post type -- I get a lot of emails from folks who want to add songs to their sidebar. While I personally don't recommend loud music that plays automatically, I do love the idea of adding a playlist to your site. It's a fun way to express yourself and it's easy too.

To add music to your sidebar, all you have to do is add some code into a widget. I've gone through some of the options out there, and have rounded up a selection of services for you to try. There's a ton of folks creating music widgets, so if you've got one you like, share it with us below.

Quick Tip! Add a Break to Your Post

Writing a long post and wish the whole thing didn't show up on your blog's homepage? Just use a page break!

Page breaks are simple ways to show only the first portion of your post. This way your homepage stays clean, and your readers can click in to see more. You can even customize the "read more" sentence that people click on.

One of the best parts of working at OnSugar is getting to read all the posts everyone is creating. Okay, so I’m not actually reading all of them -- there’s far too many and I’d get absolutely nothing done if I did! -- but I do see a lot of interesting things each day.

Starting this week I thought I'd share some of my favorite OnSugar posts with you. Here's what you had to offer this week:

New Feature: Share Your Comments on Facebook

Last week our OnSugar developers rolled out another way to integrate your OnSugar activity with your Facebook account. You can already update your status when you post a new story, but now you can update your status when you leave a comment too! To do so, just check the "Post this comment to my Facebook feed" box right below the comment box. When you click post, it will post your comment and automatically update your Facebook status. Now all of your Facebook pals can see what you have to say.

Note: This feature is only available on blogs with unmapped domains (domains that still contain onsugar.com in their url).

New Themes Created By You

While we've been working on adding new features to OnSugar, some of you have been working on making it look better.

Over the past few weeks several members have created hot new themes for the rest of you to use. Some of these are original works of art, while others are ports of popular themes from other places. From strange little pink towns to clean simple green designs, there's a fun new theme for everyone. Heck, OnSugar member persiancat has even offered you a Twilight-inspired theme! And if you like what you see, he's even created a site you can follow to find out when he makes more!

New Feature: OnSugar Bookmark Tool

Easily create posts by adding the OnSugar Bookmark Tool link to your browser. Drag the link into the bookmark toolbar, or right-click to add the link to your favorites/bookmarks.

If you’ve ever stumbled across something and thought, “Wow, I need to share that with my friends right now,” then we have great news for you. This week we’re happy to introduce our new OnSugar Bookmark Tool!

This tool will allow you to easily add a link type post to your blog. It pulls in the url automatically and allows you to create a title, add text and choose an image. You can even give your new post categories and tags. Once you hit the save button, the post automatically publishes to your OnSugar blog. Now you can post without being on your blog!

Here’s how to get started:

Option 1: Right-click on the link above and select "Bookmark this link."
Option 2: Drag the link onto your toolbar or favorites.

New Feature: Change Your Time Zone

Lately our number one question has been how do you change your time zone. Believe it or not, this was something you couldn’t do until just this week!

Luckily, our development team are a great group of folks and have listened to your requests. Now you can change your time zone easily. To do so, click on “Blog Settings” in the dropdown menu and then scroll to the bottom of the page. There you’ll be able to choose from many different locations. Just let us know where you are, and your blog will reflect the correct time.

Discover New Blogs and Keep Track of the Ones You Follow

While this blog has been pretty quiet lately, things have actually been buzzing at the OnSugar HQ.

Last week we rolled out a bunch of improvements -- check out the top navigation bar, now with a built in search! -- and while we're excited about all the features, there are two things that you absolutely can't miss.

First of all, let me introduce you to the Tracker. This tool is a great way to keep track of all the OnSugar blogs you're following, as well as PopSugar Community Groups and Editorial. Stories will appear here with the most recently updated (either posted or commented on) post showing up first. Now you'll never miss another post or comment! And if you're tired of a certain post, just click the box and mark it read. Learn more about using the Tracker.

Secondly, you can now easily find new blogs to follow. Attached to the Tracker are two tabs: Discover and Explore. Discover allows you to keep track of posts as they happen (OnSugar and PopSugar Network), while Explore lets you find new OnSugar blogs by genre. Now you can discover who else is blogging about topics you enjoy. And who knows, maybe your blog will be featured!
