Although OnSugar allows you to upload MP3s to your blog -- just use the audio post type -- I get a lot of emails from folks who want to add songs to their sidebar. While I personally don't recommend loud music that plays automatically, I do love the idea of adding a playlist to your site. It's a fun way to express yourself and it's easy too.
To add music to your sidebar, all you have to do is add some code into a widget. I've gone through some of the options out there, and have rounded up a selection of services for you to try. There's a ton of folks creating music widgets, so if you've got one you like, share it with us below.
Discover our finds and learn how to add the code to your site:
- Mixpod (used above) gives you many style options and colors, and has a library of songs you can add. You can also select autoplay, and whether or not it can loop.
- Grooveshark allows you to search for songs, upload your own, and customize your look.
- MP3 Player lets you upload one song and will give you the code to paste it in. You can choose if it loops and if it autoplays.
- Last.FM also has some pretty cool widgets, but as of this post, their official widgets page seems to be broken.
Now that you've got the code, how do you add it to your site? Well you could paste it into your post code -- like I've done above -- or you could add it to your sidebar. Here's how:
- Click on "Widgets" from your dropdown menu.
- Select the column you want to put it in and then select "Text or HTML" from the left. This will pop open a new box.
- Make sure you switch to "Raw HTML" mode. Do this by clicking the link below the body box. If you are in Raw HTML mode, you will not see any editing icons.
- Paste the code you get from the other websites into the body box. Click "Save Options" and then drag the box you just created into the order you want it.
- Navigate back to your blog and view your new music widget in action!
